MP strikes first blow to demolish old village hall

Arundel & South Downs MP Nick Herbert was seen with a hammer in his hand in Ashurst last week (27 July) as he struck the first blow to demolish the old village hall.

Villagers in Ashurst are currently raising funds to build a new hall, replacing the old building which is now over one hundred years old and in a poor state of repair.

Mr Herbert was invited by villagers to take the first swing with the hammer to mark the beginning of the demolition and help raise funds for the new hall.

Ashurst's Village Hall Committee have raised over £200,000 towards the new hall, but need to raise a further £186,000.

Following his visit, Mr Herbert commented: "It was quite unusual to be seen destroying a building in my constituency but it was all in a great cause!

"The Committee is really enthusiastic about building a new village hall for the whole community to enjoy and they have done a fantastic job in raising so much already.

"They've secured more than half the funds needed, which is the hardest part, and now they need help with the rest. I hope that some generous benefactors will step forward to help the community."
