MP presents innovation awards to Angmering students

Angmering Secondary School students received awards for innovation from the Arundel & South Downs MP Nick Herbert on Friday (1 February).

The MP presented the Crest awards to the runners up of a regional competition organised by Southern Water working in partnership with Global Action Plan.  The students had been tasked with designing an innovative solution to save water for the competition.

The school's design was a team effort from 19 Key Stage 3 students and provides a solution for sink to toilet water.  It recycles 'grey' water by refilling a toilet cistern with used sink water instead of having to use fresh water.  The design intends to save on resources at treatment stage, and recycles effectively.

The students gave a presentation to Nick Herbert which demonstrated their knowledge and input into the design.  It highlighted what they have learned in the process and from visits to Southern Water's treatment works.

The school and the students have all become more water efficient through their participation.  The students taking part in the programme also communicated water saving ideas to the other pupils and checked on the effectiveness of the school's existing solutions.

Each participating school was paired with a Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) product design ambassador from the University of Brighton who supported them throughout the programme. The STEM programme inspires the learning of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

As runners up, each participating student from Angmering School received a Crest award certificate from Nick Herbert MP and Ajay Sharman, the regional director of the STEM programme.

After the presentation Nick Herbert MP said: "I was impressed with the research and hard work which the students put into this project, and the professionalism of their presentation.  It was good to see them taking such an interest in the conservation of such an important natural resource, and they certainly deserved their awards."
