Over 85 members and supporters of the Conservative Party gathered together to mark the anniversary with a hog roast lunch.

Sir Nicholas, MP for Mid Sussex, is the grandson of the former Prime Minister who in 2002 was voted the greatest Briton of all time.

Arundel & South Downs MP Nick Herbert, who has worked closely with Sir Nicholas to oppose proposals for a new town between Henfield and Sayers Common, also attended the celebration lunch.

Sir Nicholas chatted to individual party members before delivering a speech in tribute to the life of Churchill, recalling his relationship with his grandfather and the experience of growing up with the wartime Prime Minister.

Following the event, Nick Herbert commented: “It was tremendous for local Party members to have the opportunity to honour the life of Sir Winston Churchill with his grandson, Sir Nicholas Soames.

"Sir Nicholas gave a fascinating and often moving speech, and I think everyone who attended the lunch enjoyed a personal insight into the life of the greatest of Prime Ministers which they would not have heard before."
