MP quizzed by Year 6 pupils at Jolesfield School

Arundel & South Downs MP Nick Herbert visited Jolesfield CE Primary School in Partridge Green on Friday (17 June).

Mr Herbert was welcomed to the school by the co-headteacher, Mrs Christine Knight, and one of the school's governors Mr Rory Payne.  Mrs Knight shares her headship at the school with Miss Langley.

Mrs Knight gave the MP a tour of the school and its facilities, and she explained how the learning was structured.  Jolesfield School is very proud of its Ofsted ‘Outstanding' status, and the MP was able to see how this high standard was achieved.

Mr Herbert was also interested to learn about Jolesfield's links to other schools, in particular the relationship that has been created with Northgate School in Crawley.  The special link is part of the schools ongoing curriculum and allows the year 3 and 4 children to share information about two very different areas of the County.

Following the tour Mr Herbert was invited to join Year 6 pupils who had prepared many questions to put to him.  The children demonstrated their interest in the role of an MP, as well as current local issues.

The pupils were enthusiastic to quiz their local MP, and asked questions about his role and its highlights.  Some of the questions asked included, ‘Who inspired you to become an MP?' ‘What are the best and worst parts of the job?' ‘Who is the most famous person you have met?' and ‘What is it like in Parliament?'

The children also asked him some more current questions relating to local issues, the subjects which included the proposed bus cuts, University fees and improvements to the local park.

Nick Herbert commented: "I very much enjoyed my visit to Jolesfield School.  It was good to speak Mrs Knight and learn how high standards have been achieved.  I particularly enjoyed the question and answer session with the pupils who had interesting and tough questions for me.  I think careers as TV interviewers might be beckoning for some of them!"
