Rural
Nick passionately believes in rural communities and has devoted much of his working life to defending them.
As Shadow Secretary of State for the Environment, Food & Rural Affairs before the General Election in May, Nick spoke for the Conservative Party on issues such as agriculture and rural services.
Agriculture has not only helped define the distinctive nature of our Downland communities and our natural landscape but, along with horticulture, continues to make a valuable contribution to the local economy.
Nick is extremely supportive of local Farmers’ Markets which not only provide farmers with valuable income but also give people access to high quality and locally produced food. The sale of locally produced food at local markets reduces the distance which the food has travelled before it reaches the consumer, thereby reducing its impact on the environment.
As Shadow Defra Secretary, Nick launched several initiatives to support the rural economy, including the Honest Food Campaign for clear ‘country of origin labelling' of food, and Rural Action, an agenda to empower and re-invigorate rural communities.
