Pulborough girl's Westminster work experience

28 October 2011
Pulborough teenager Katherine Dean has spent three days of work experience in the office of Arundel & South Downs MP Nick Herbert.
Katherine, 17, who is studying for her A-Levels at The Weald School in Billingshurst, plans to take a degree in politics at university and wanted to see for herself how the system works.
While there she got the chance to see Parliament in action, taking a tour, seeing both the House of Commons and House of Lords in session and helping the MP's staff with routine constituency work.
She was also able to visit the Home Office, where Mr Herbert is a Minister, to meet with civil servants and discuss with them a career in Government.
Speaking after her work experience Katherine said: "Working in Mr Herbert's office was such a privilege. It was fascinating to see the level of response, care and commitment towards each personal issue raised by constituents, and how local government interlinks with Parliament. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there, and the experience has left me with no doubt in my mind which direction my future will take."
Nick Herbert commented "It was a real pleasure to meet Katherine and be able to give her work experience in my office. We receive a lot of applications for work experience but I like to give priority to young people who live in my constituency. My team really enjoyed Katherine's company and I'm glad that she found it a useful experience."
