MP supports Greener Travel Walks
23 September 2011
Arundel & South Downs MP Nick Herbert met members of the South Downs Society as they set off for a special walk on Friday.
The organised walk was part of the South Downs Society's promotion of Greener Travel Walks which ran from 17 to 24 September. The aim of the week was to help people enjoy the South Downs and its National Park in the most sustainable way possible, on foot or via public transport.
The 5½ mile riverside stroll from Arundel to Houghton Bridge was led by society member Mr Roy Shaw. A planned coffee stop at the Black Rabbit pub included a short talk about the history of the new footbridge over the River Arun at South Stoke. The walkers continued onto the Bridge Inn for lunch before catching the return train back from Amberley.
The South Downs Society's members arrived for the walk by train, demonstrating how easy it is easy to enjoy the Downs in an environmentally thoughtful way. The Society encourages residents and visitors of West Sussex to enjoy the beauty of the South Downs whilst protecting it and has almost 2,500 members.
Jaquetta Fewster, Director of the South Downs Society, said: "We are delighted that Nick Herbert came to send us off on our walk between Arundel and Amberley as part of our Greener Travel Walks initiative. Walking in the South Downs is a wonderful thing to do, and being able to travel there by bus and train makes it an even more sustainable activity."
Nick Herbert commented: "I was delighted to meet members of the South Downs Society at the start of their walk. There are such beautiful walks along the banks of rivers like the Arun as well as on the surrounding Downs, and as the Society showed, many people can get to these walks by public transport."
