Environment

Global warming is one of the great issues of our time.

Predictions for the UK indicate that average temperatures will increase by between 2°C and 3.5°C by 2100.  This could have huge implications for our biodiversity, economy and landscape.

Nick believes that politicians of all parties must work together to help tackle climate change.  This is particularly important given the Stern Report’s conclusion that the economic price of not dealing with global warming far outweighs the costs of doing so.  It estimates that the consequences of climate change, if left unchecked, could see the global economy shrink by up to one fifth.  In the words of Al Gore’s film, climate change is an “inconvenient truth” which can no longer be ignored.

But concern about the environment is also very local.  There are many problems which affect the quality of our environment and neighbourhoods in West Sussex.

Proposals for landfill sites at Laybrook and Rock Common not only represent a threat to the quality of life in local communities but they graphically demonstrate a failure on our part to reduce the amount of waste that we produce and to increase the amount we recycle.

Vandalism, graffiti and litter aren’t just the preserve of urban areas.  In 2004 an estimated 32,000 vehicles were abandoned in Sussex and there were nearly 900 reports of graffiti on West Sussex County Council buildings alone.  Fly tipping has also increased by over 50 per cent over the past five years.

Nick tries to minimise his impact on the environment where possible and has signed up to West Sussex County Council’s 10 per cent challenge.
